Prompt Engineer Staffing
Prompt Work You Can Measure
At many companies, prompt engineering is no longer a separate job. It has been folded into AI engineering, and a generative AI engineer does it alongside retrieval and deployment. A standalone hire still makes sense when your application exists and output quality is the problem. Zilo AI helps companies across India hire prompt engineers who design, test and improve prompts, system instructions and evaluation sets to raise the accuracy, consistency and safety of LLM outputs, and control their cost.
Evaluation is the larger share of the job, because a prompt nobody has measured is a guess. Candidates are screened for hands-on work with real data, modern frameworks and deployment. If your brief needs an engineer more than a specialist, we also hire generative AI and AI product engineers. Use contract hiring for a first evaluation set or a launch, contract-to-hire if the role may grow, and permanent hiring when several LLM products are live.
Evaluation Sets Included
The role we hire for builds and runs test sets, so every prompt or model change has evidence behind it.
Hands-On With Real Data
Candidates are screened on hands-on work with real data, modern frameworks and deployment.
Prompts Treated Like Code
The work includes prompt versioning, structured outputs and few-shot design that downstream systems can rely on.
Neighbouring Roles Covered
We also hire generative AI and AI product engineers for briefs that need the application built as well as tuned.
Roles We Fill
Prompt and Generative AI Roles We Fill
Hire a prompt specialist for output quality, or choose an engineer who can build the application too. The cards below show how the roles differ.
Generative AI (GenAI) Engineer
Develops LLM-powered products using retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), fine-tuning, embeddings and evaluation pipelines, and integrates them securely into your applications and workflows.
AI Product Engineer
A product-minded engineer who ships user-facing AI features end to end, from model and prompt integration to APIs, UI, analytics and rapid experiments with real users.
NLP Engineer
Builds language-understanding systems such as text classification, entity extraction, semantic search, summarization, chatbots and multilingual NLP pipelines for real-world data.
Prompt Engineer
Designs, tests and optimizes prompts, system instructions and evaluation sets to improve the accuracy, consistency, safety and cost of LLM outputs across your use cases.
For Recruiters & Hiring Managers
How to Hire a Prompt Engineer Who Measures the Work
The biggest question comes first: do you need this role at all? After that, the main risk is hiring someone who collects clever prompts and has never built a test set. These points cover both.

Interview questions worth asking
- Here are twenty model outputs. How would you score them, and who should do the scoring?
- A customer got a wrong answer. How do you tell whether retrieval, the prompt or the model failed?
- Your provider releases a new model version. What do you do before switching?
- How could text inside an uploaded document change this assistant's behaviour, and what stops it?
- Tell me about a prompt change that looked better but scored worse. What happened?
- How do you trade output quality against latency and token cost on a live feature?
Ask If This Is a Separate Job
If nobody has built the application yet, hire a generative AI engineer first. A prompt specialist is useful once there is a working system to improve.
Put Evaluation in the Ad
A strong prompt engineer job description makes test sets, scoring and regression checks a major duty. Ads that mention only writing prompts attract the wrong people.
Test With a Rubric Task
Hand over a batch of real outputs and ask for a scoring rubric. Nothing separates measured work from guesswork more quickly.
Line Up the Domain Experts
Someone must decide whether a legal, medical or finance answer is right. Name those reviewers and agree how much time they can give.
Check Prompt Injection Knowledge
Good candidates know instructions alone will not stop an attack, and that limits on tools and data access matter too.
Start With a Contract if Unsure
A contract specialist can build your first evaluation set and show whether the need is lasting. Permanent hiring can follow if it is.

Do we really need a dedicated prompt engineer?
Often not. Many teams give this work to AI engineers. A separate hire makes sense when a working application has quality problems, or when domain-heavy output needs constant evaluation.
How does a prompt engineer differ from a generative AI engineer?
A prompt engineer concentrates on prompts, system instructions and evaluation. A generative AI engineer builds the whole application, including retrieval and integrations. We hire both.
Why is evaluation such a large part of the job?
LLM output varies, and one change can help some cases while harming others. A proper evaluation set is the only reliable way to know whether a prompt or model update is an improvement.
How do you screen prompt engineers?
Candidates are screened for hands-on work with real data, modern frameworks and deployment, not just research experience.
Can we hire a prompt engineer on contract?
Yes. Contract suits a defined job such as building a first evaluation set or tuning an assistant before launch. Contract-to-hire and permanent terms are also available.
Does a prompt engineer need to write code?
For most roles, some Python helps, because evaluations run across many examples. A non-coding specialist can work inside good tooling, but will rely on engineers for the rest.
