A business development executive’s day is mostly rejection handled politely. They call a list of prospects, follow up on an unanswered LinkedIn message, visit an office park if the role is in the field, and work out in a few minutes whether someone has a real need and any authority to buy. The result they deliver is a qualified meeting or demo, logged in the CRM with enough notes that the next person can pick it up. In most companies, a BDE opens the door and somebody more senior closes the deal, though smaller firms often ask for both.

Below is a template you can copy, and then how the role grows by level, how to screen for it, what to avoid in the ad and how to choose your hiring terms.

Choose inside or field before you edit this, and remove what does not apply. A BDE who expects a laptop and a headset will not stay long on a role with daily visits, and the reverse is equally true.

How the business development executive role changes by level

Trainee or junior BDE

Entry-level BDEs work from a list provided by the company, using a script or call guide. For freshers, degree subject matters little. Screen for spoken confidence, resilience and whether they prepared for the conversation at all. Spell out the training they will receive, because they cannot succeed on product knowledge they have not been given.

Business development executive

With some experience, the person builds their own lists, adapts their message by industry and manages a small territory or segment. Ask for meeting and opportunity numbers from their last job. In smaller firms, the role may close simpler deals too, so tell candidates if that is expected.

Senior BDE or business development manager

Seniors chase larger accounts, open partnerships and sometimes guide juniors. The title “business development manager” is loose in India: it may mean a senior individual contributor, or someone with a team. Say which you mean. Once the person owns closing and a team’s forecast, you are writing a sales manager’s job description instead.

BDE skills that matter most, and how to check them

  • Cold outreach under pressure. Run a short mock call in which you interrupt and say you are not interested. See whether they stay polite, ask one useful question and try for a next step.
  • Research. Give them a real company name and a short time to prepare. Ask who they would contact, why that person, and what the first line of the email should say.
  • Qualification. Describe a friendly prospect who has no budget this year. A disciplined BDE marks a follow-up date, and does not pass the prospect on as a hot lead.
  • Written outreach. Ask them to write a three-line cold email for your product. Look for one specific reason to reply, rather than a paragraph about the company.
  • Numbers and CRM habits. Ask for their usual daily activity, connection rate and meetings booked, and how they tracked them. Vague answers often mean they did not own a target.

Hold part of the interview by phone, if the job is phone-based. That is how prospects will meet this person, and some candidates who sparkle in a room go flat on a call.

Common business development executive job description mistakes

  • Expecting a closer at BDE level. Ads that want full revenue ownership from a junior profile bring disappointment on both sides. Fix: measure the role on qualified meetings, or call it a sales role and adjust the level.
  • Vague “good communication skills” requirements. The phrase filters nobody. Fix: name the languages, call volume and customer type.
  • Keeping quiet about field work. Candidates who find out about daily travel at the offer stage will walk away. Fix: state the travel, territory and how expenses work.
  • Offering incentives without explaining them. “Attractive incentives” is too common to mean anything. Fix: describe what earns an incentive, such as a qualified meeting or a signed deal.
  • Using activity counts as the only measure. Dial targets alone push people to rush poor calls. Fix: pair activity with the quality of meetings that sales accepts.

Contract, contract-to-hire or permanent: which suits a business development executive

Contract BDEs help for a campaign with a fixed list, such as event follow-up, testing a new city or clearing a backlog of old leads. Give them scripts, data and a clear definition of a qualified lead from the first day.

Contract-to-hire is a practical way to judge this role, as a BDE’s activity and meeting quality are visible soon after they start. It suits companies building their first outbound function, where the manager is learning what good looks like too.

Permanent hiring is better when you want people to grow into AE roles, since product knowledge and market contacts build over time. Zilo AI helps employers hire business development executives in India on contract, contract-to-hire or permanent terms, and volume hiring is an option for a larger desk. Frequently asked questions

What should a business development executive job description include?

Cover the product, target customer, outreach channels, inside or field split, languages, CRM and what counts as success. Explain how incentives work so that candidates can compare your offer fairly.

What is the difference between a BDE and a sales manager?

A BDE finds and qualifies new opportunities, usually as an individual contributor at an early career stage. A sales manager owns closing and revenue for a team, and adds coaching and forecasting.

What is the difference between a BDE and an SDR?

An SDR or inside sales executive works from a desk through high-volume cadences and hands over qualified meetings. A BDE title is broader in India and may include field visits, referrals or simple closing.

Can a fresher be a business development executive?

Yes, for entry-level roles with training and a clear lead source. Freshers struggle when they are expected to build a market alone, so give them a list, a script and regular call reviews.

Which targets should a BDE carry?

Use qualified meetings or sales-accepted opportunities as the main target. Add revenue only if the BDE truly controls closing on smaller deals.
